Week two of May’s National Bike Month, and we’re highlighting our second grant recipient, Bike Club OKC. As a reminder, we here at Chamois Butt’r are highlighting one organization each week and then putting our money where our mouth is by donating $1,000 to the highlighted cause to support these great organizations and inspire you to make positive change in your own community.
We’re asking you to help us find a fifth non-profit organization that will receive our fifth and final $1,000 donation. You can participate on our @chamoisbuttr social media channels. There will also be ways to win Chamois Butt’r products each week during the month of May when you participate by nominating a potential non-profit partner.
Much like our campaign’s opening nonprofit, Bike Club OKC’s programming focuses on teaching kids healthy habits and provides kids with the ability to access and ride a bike in a welcoming and safe environment. Bike Club is a once-weekly after-school club for girls and boys in elementary and middle schools. Each Club has up to 25 student members. Not only is program completely free for participants, each student that completes the year receives a bike and a helmet to take home.
Bike Club OKC is all about mentorship on wheels. The club teaches bike safety, cycling skills, and STEM; along with life lessons focused around respect, cooperation, and teamwork. Bike Club encourages ABCs (Attendance, Behavior and Coursework), teaches a valuable life skill – safely and confidently operating a bicycle, encourages a positive lifestyle, develops teamwork and cooperation during group rides, and builds invaluable relationships with adults – and they have fun doing it.
Riding fills a void in after-school opportunities for students and doubles the amount of time students spend exercising. For many students, riding a bike builds their confidence, improves communication skills, and exposes them to nearby businesses and attractions that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to experience.
These activities also include bicycle trips to a variety of destinations that the group can explore – the area high school or middle school, a library or park, a restaurant or snack shop, or just a long ride. The Club fosters exploration by bike in a safe and welcoming manner to establish new connections to riding at an early age.
Bike Club kicks-off each year in late September and runs for approximately 20-25 weeks, finishing in early May. The program is free for all students, and each student who completes the program receives his or her own bike, helmet, safety vest, and lights as well as a bike lock. We’re proud to support their 2020 graduating class with products and gear. Seeing the smiles on the kid’s faces celebrating their year long commitment to bikes makes us so excited to support the next class of Club members.
Bike Club OKC is expanding its program to another new school for the 2021-22 school year. Our $1,000 grant will help purchase the necessary bikes, helmets and safety vests needed to teach safe cycling to another group of students. We’d love it if you’d consider helping us support the organization by donating here: https://www.bikeclubokc.com
Stay tuned for week three of our Bike Month grant recipients and don’t forget, you can win Chamois Butt’r gear when you nominate a non-profit partner here: http://bit.ly/BikeMonthGrants. One final organization will be selected at the end of the month to receive our remaining $1,000 Bike Month grant.
